The Platform (2020)

by Film Notions

The Platform or El Hoyo, is Netflix’s new film out of Spain, and I would say it’s essential viewing. Mind you, it’s probably not for the squeamish as there is plenty of gore involved. But if you’re ok with that, start streaming.

Quite similar in many ways to Bong Joon-Ho’s Snowpiercer, The Platform heavily focuses on a class system. The higher levels, like the front of the train, get the most benefits. The big difference here is your only on a particular platform for 30 days. Then, the next month you’re moved to a different level. So each person goes through each class system.

What’s intriguing here, is how people act whichever level they’re on. There are always people below them and always people above, and people act accordingly.

There are strong messages here. Messages we all need to be reminded of, especially right now. It’s quite unbelievable the release has occurred at this pertinent time. The Platform is a riveting and tense ride that will keep you contemplating far into the future.
