When did you discover your passion for film and television?
I discovered my love for film & television as a kid. My first memory is being in front of a TV set, watching TV. I’ve always been about using my imagination & getting caught up in it. Film & TV allowed me to do that & it continues to inspire me in that way.
Tell me a little about your background:
I’m born & raised in Los Angeles. 34 years old. Have a younger brother that’s 22, who also shares a love of entertainment
What exactly inspired you to start G_Reelz?
G_Reelz started on my personal movie page with me posting the movie of the day. Some of my friends thought it was cheesy while others encouraged me to turn it into its own page. This is when I learned about influencers & how certain niches could have great reach. I researched the potential of creating an entertainment page that was basically a Hollywood Reporter with pictures & from there I was reached out to by a company called Brandfire that wanted to sponsor the page & help it grow from scratch.I was skeptical at first but here we are a few years later & they have helped me get here. Something I started as a hobby is now my own brand & it has been amazing to see it grow. But even more than that is discovering other pages on this platform. I’m either learning more from them or offering my advice to help them & it’s really a community of pages that support each other in the best way.
Do you remember the first review you wrote? What was it?
My first review on G_reelz was for John Carpenter’s The Fog. I remember it because a lot of this started around October the year I began doing it & movies of the day centered around horror as we lead up to Halloween.
What’s a typical day in the life of you?
A typical day for me is I get up & prep posts for G_reelz & I also prep writing for www.reeltalkinc.com which is a writing gig I was lucky enough to get because of G_reelz. It’s a great website, run by great people with a passion for film & entertainment, so it has been inspiring learning from them as well. Other than that, staring midday, I get ready for my other job, which is doing marketing management at a restaurant. It’s a very full day, but I love it. The weekends I unwind with friends & enjoy a nice break from responsibility so I can recharge to do it all over again once the new week starts.
What are your short and long term goals for G_Reelz?
I feel like the natural progression is to utilize IGTV a bit more. I’ll either do on camera posts for G_Reelz I create posts that a more interactive & video driven because Instagram feels like it’s headed in they direction. I’m still testing the best way to transiton from still photos to video.
What do you like/dislike most about what you do?
I love film & TV so being able to discuss it everyday with like-minded people is what I love most. What I like least is fighting the Instagram algorithm which is constantly changing so I have to consistently adjust to that change to maintain my reach.
Halloween (1978), Psycho, Fight Club, 25th Hour, Seven, The Breakfast Club, The Dark Knight, American Beauty, Good Will Hunting, The Social Network & so many more.
Edward Norton, Morgan Freeman, Christian Bale, Meryl Streep, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Downey Jr, Jake Gyllenhaal
David Fincher, Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino, Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg.
Any advice for aspiring film critics/pages?
I would say it’s important never to give up & have your own distinct voice because that’s what will make you stand out. Be inspired by others but find a way to make this niche your own, so you bring something new to the table.
