2017’s most frustrating film. I’ve made it clear that I don’t mind Snyder’s approach to things. I’m not saying it’s perfect, but he had a specific vision and plan for these characters. Warner Bros destroyed it, and their franchise with it.
Post-BvS, Snyder had to make course corrections for Justice League. Unfortunately, Warner Bros had to stick their fingers into everything. Whedon gets brought in, and WB causes a train wreck. None of the story set up in previous films gets paid off. Superman’s return is fumbled. Character moments are ditched. The through line is just plain obliterated.
Zimmer’s work is mostly ditched by an egotistical Elfman, resulting in sonic wallpaper for most of the film and some ridiculous shoe-horning of historical themes for Batman and Superman.
Endless reshoots result in almost the whole film being changed – the most visible side effect being the infamous Cavill mo removal. Tone is changed too.
The outcome? A frankensteined film that didn’t make money and was critically panned. They should have released the original cut and saved the money.
Format: 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
The transfer is technically sound, offering a pleasing amount of detail and some nice colours. Unfortunately, the presentation does vary from time to time due to the Snyder/Whedon variances and I dislike the fact that the aspect ratio doesn’t match the other DCEU entries.
Once again, the Dolby Atmos track is an absolute joy to listen to. One thing Warner Bros gets right are the dynamics of their mixes. Disney could take a lesson or two here.
