Hobbs & Shaw (2019)

Loved this! So many laughs! There’s not much I didn’t like about this welcomed spin off from the Fast & Furious world. When I first saw the trailer I was in. I’m not a huge fan of the films before it. I watch them, but generally once they come out on blu-ray, when I feel like dissolving into the couch with not much thought going on. But, when I saw what they were doing here, I was definitely excited.

Basically putting a spin on an anti-buddy cop movie, like Tango & Cash or the first Lethal Weapon, Hobbs and Shaw is the two guys going head to head to try and outdo one another in every aspect. The two go at each other relentlessly, and I could have watched that for the entire 135 minutes. The jokes and put-downs are downright hilarious and Statham & Johnson pit off each other perfectly.

The action scenes are all great. There are some nice fight scenes and a whole lot of CGI to keep the big screen lit with energy. It is these scenes, towards the end of the film, that do get a little long in the tooth, and start to make the film feel pretty damn long. At the same time, there’s enough to impress, with special note to some scenes with Idris and his motorbike. Mind Blown!

Everyone’s great in it. Idris and Kirby are fantastic additions, and I do hope we see more of them in this series. Vanessa Kirby, has transformed herself from Princess Margaret in The Crown, to a complete badass, who can match it with the best of them. She completely owns this character, and I’m certainly keen to see her in more action films.

Hobbs & Shaw may not completely satisfy hard core Fast & Furious fans, but for the likes of me, who can take them or leave them, this is up there with one of the best in the series. For me, the lack of Dom and the family, which really feels tired to me now (not to mention, Dom just annoys me), makes this all the more enjoyable.
